“Okay. We’re playing tennis today, right?”

“Wait, what?” The young man looked over at her with a puzzled expression. “Tennis?”

    “Yah, did you forget already?”

She stopped and set her backpack down on the stone bench by the side of the walkway and rummaged through the contents of her bag. She pulled out a pastel green card from one of the folders she always carried around.

“Remember this?” She waved the folded sheet of paper in front of the boy’s face.

“Oh, right. That.” Seth's eyes darted away, then back; he turned away and started staring down the other side of the walkway. Chris was glad that he was beyond the blushing stage now. That had been annoying for a day or two. Apparently he was still nervous though since he started playing with his cuffs.

“I honestly can’t tell if you’re nervous because of this, she waved the card again, or because you’re about to get killed in tennis.”

    He declined to comment.

Smirking, she quickly (but carefully) stuffed the card back into her folder and dumped her papers back into her bag. Chris grabbed his hand, pulling him forward.

    “Come on, let’s go!”

Seth lurched forward from his spot, almost tripping over his feet as he was dragged along.

They went to the park a few blocks away from Chris’s house. They could have just gone to the tennis courts at school, but obviously Seth didn’t have an outfit appropriate for the occasion. Now having dropped by the Sun’s house, Chris had donned a tank top and a tennis skirt, and Seth was dressed in one of Aaron’s old t-shirts and tennis shorts. Their school bags had of course been left at the house.

“I am certain that you are fully aware that I have not held a tennis racket for several years...” Seth looked at the racket in his hand and tried gripping it a few times. He just wanted to put it out there in case Chris had somehow been expecting him to become magically talented at tennis over the last two weeks.

“False. You held a racket just last week,” she countered. Apparently holding a couple rackets for her while walking to class counted then. “Anyways, let’s get going.”

She claimed the far side of the court and walked over with a hopper full of tennis balls.

“Well, come on. Hop to it!”

Seth heaved a sigh and hoped that he wouldn’t regret this.

Sweat soaked his face and shirt as he collapsed on the hard court, breathing hard, surrounded by little green balls.

They hadn’t so much as played tennis as Chris had drilled Seth with endless forehands, backhands, volleys, and what not. It was as if she had an infinite loop programmed into her mind and the only way to stop it was for him to crash. Literally. After this thought passed through his head, the boy lost consciousness for a moment.

At the very least, he didn’t feel her dragging him to the shade. He was out cold.

Hm, I wonder what that green card could possibly be. :giggle:
